The Old Folks: Beryl & Leslie Martin
Born in the 1920s, Beryl and Leslie both served in His Majesty's Royal Navy in World War II where they met. Beryl was born in Minster on the Isle of Sheppey while Leslie was born in Macclesfield.
Leslie toiled as Cashier for a firm in the building trade in Macclesfield and finally rose to become Company Secretary.
Beryl, meanwhile, stayed at home and brought up the children although she did find time to run the Hursdfield Guide Company, be a Sunday School teacher and train as a mature student to become a teacher of infants while nursing her then sick mother. Before that, she was the first lollipop lady in Cheshire and also worked as school secretary of Trinity Square School which was close to Holy Trinity Church, Hurdsfield.
Leslie was a highly skilled badminton player and both are musical; Beryl plays the piano while Leslie is an expert on the piano-accordian although we feel he could also have become a talented percussion player.
Since moving to Worcester in the 1980s, they became fully immersed in the forces’ charity SSAFA while also keeping fit and devoting much of their time to the Church of St Mark in the Cherry Orchard. They are now still actively involved locally in the Guiding support group, The Trefoil Guild, while Leslie is a member of a local Probus club.
